Media Statement

VAVI A PATHOLOGICAL LIAR

The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) takes offence at the
fallacious deceits Mr Vavi continues to peddle within media circles. In his
recent radio interview on SA FM, he palpably claimed he was fired from
COSATU for his role in fighting corruption, and alleged that some unions,
including POPCRU, were at the forefront of these acts.

Mr Vavi, who wants to claim a victim status in the public eye through
manipulating facts and using the names of our unions proudly affiliated to
COSATU, has in fact himself being centric to most root challenges the trade
union federation COSATU has withered and defeated over the recent past
years.

These unfounded and mischievous allegations are misleading and can therefore
not be left unchallenged. It is for this purpose that we wish to remind the
public that it was under the leadership of this self-centric and
opportunistic man that we correctly choose to make a thorough analogy on the
background of his ideological deviation.

For so long as Mr Vavi lies about why he left COSATU, we will never shy away
from repeating the reason for his departure, which were mainly guided by the
need to instil discipline within the federation. We have to put the facts
bare and straight at all times to depict these kinds of political askaris
for what they are, and we dare Mr Vavi to challenge these assertions in the
public;

The forensic report by the Sizwe Ntsaluba Gobodo firm of auditors found that
Zwelinzima Vavi:

a) Sold COSATU House less than the market value to the same person who
also bought the old COSATU House

b) The daughter of Zwelinzima Vavi was employed by VMS, a company that
had been contracted by Zwelinzima Vavi to provide technological services to
the COSATU house and she was paid R10 000 by VMS . She only stopped
working for VMS when the media reports came out.

c) The wife of Mr, Vavi was also a director at VMS, reflecting a
direct conflict of interest.

The Special CEC held in 2015 said that where there are identified fraudulent
activities, and were awaiting the outcomes of the issues by the Law
Enforcement Agencies.

We also want the federation to investigate whether the companies that were
involved in the new COSATU building were also not linked to Zwelinzima Vavi
and his family

Mr Vavi left the federation highly indebted.

d) He entered into contracts with the same VMS which left the federation
having to service the contract at an amount of R 9 million a year

e) All the free things promised in the contract with VMS are actually
being paid for to this day

He employed his girlfriend, without following proper procedure .The same
women who he later slept with at the COSATU offices is the one he employed
irregular. NOBs were not informed, and HR was not involved.

1. He refused to take second-class on flight bookings like other NOBs,
he demanded first class.

2. 2. He hired a higher level Mercedes Benz and other similar higher
standard cars for himself when visiting other provinces and instructed
staff to hire a Toyota, VW and others for the NOBs

3. It is reported that he owns multiple houses all over the country,
fronts as property for his wife. There are four houses in Sandton, two
apartments in Durban, and another one in Cape Town.

4. ZV has a transport company in mining in KZN. He hires foreigners as
drivers and exploits them , including apparently being physical with them

5. He has been hiring domestic workers from Malawi and some of them
left because of abuse.

6. He has apparently abused COSATU security provided for him, including
having his wife asking them to do ironing for her.

Further, during the period March 2012 to July 2012 and at his instance, the
following personal and family travel expenses were paid by COSATU:

. A ticket for Noluthando Vavi [your wife] flying from Johannesburg
to Cape Town on 28 March 2012 for the Jazz Festival, the amount which was
paid with COSATU credit card 0526;

. Accommodation at the Nova Constantia Boutique Hotel for the Jazz
Festival during the period 28 March 2012 to 1 April 2012 in the net amount
of R14 128 for you and Noluthando Vavi;

. A ticket for Noluthando Vavi flying from Cape Town to Kimberley on
1 April 2012 and returning to Johannesburg in the net amount of R2,145;

. A ticket for Noluthando Vavi flying from Johannesburg to East
London on 11 May 2012 and returning to Johannesburg on 13 May 2012 in the
net amount of R4,182;

. A ticket for Noluthando Vavi flying from Johannesburg to Cape Town
on 27 May 2012 and returning to Johannesburg on 28 May 2012 in the net
amount of R2,318;

. A ticket for Noluthando Vavi flying from Johannesburg to Cape Town
on 31 May 2012 and returning to Johannesburg on 4 June 2012 in the net
amount of R3,572;

. A ticket for Noluthando Vavi flying from Johannesburg to Cape Town
on 6 June 2012 and returning to Johannesburg the same day in the net amount
of R1,960;

. A ticket for Nikiwe Vavi flying from Johannesburg to Durban on 9
July 2012 and returning on 15 July 2012 in the net amount of R1 726, which
amount was paid with COSATU credit card 0526; and

. A ticket for Aphelele Vavi flying from Johannesburg to Durban on 9
July 2012 and returning on15 July 2012 in the net amount of R1 555, which
amount was paid with COSATU credit card 0526.

He has failed to act in accordance with his duty of good faith towards
COSATU and in accordance with the fidelity, honesty and integrity required
of him in his position as General Secretary; and he breached clauses 3
and/or 4 and/or 5 of the COSATU Staff and Leadership Code of Conduct.

It is indeed the same unions Mr Vavi accuses that have continued to fight
this corruption.

Before Mr Vavi decides to mislead the public, he should call for his
personal lifestyle audit.
