The gap between the developed and developing worlds or North and South remains huge, while the gap between rich and poor in many countries also remains wide. - http://www.thepresidency.gov.za/speeches/welcome-address-president-jacob-zuma-world-economic-forum-africa-regional-meeting-2017 Moroccan ship held over complaint from W Sahara "The application was made by the Polisario Front and the Saharawi Democratic Arab Republic asking for the return of the phosphate removed in contravention of the international principle," lawyer Andre Bowley of Webber Wintzel told AFP. "The vessel was detained on the basis of purportedly carrying phosphate mined in Western Sahara to be sold elsewhere in violation of international law." The court in Port Elizabeth will hear the case on May 18. - http://www.news24.com/Africa/News/moroccan-ship-held-over-complaint-from-w-sahara-20170504 Teachers Flock To London To Protest At Pearson AGM Teachers from Britain, the US, South Africa, Kenya, Uganda, Denmark and New Zealand will today rally outside the annual general meeting of Pearson, the world's largest education business. Pearson is a London-based transnational company that takes advantage of foreign aid funds to profit from fee-paying schools in Africa and Asia. The schools - also bankrolled by tech tycoons Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and the World Bank - employ unqualified staff that use a highly scripted, standardised curriculum to maximise profits. The protest will start today at 10h30, London time. - http://www.morningstaronline.co.uk/a-8db1-Teachers-flock-to-London-to-protest-at-Pearson-AGM#.WQvuK1V9600 Education's Not A Commodity Privatised schools are designed to compete against other schools, and teachers are made to compete against other teachers, for the "best" results, which are measured by subjecting children to endless standardised tests. Teaching unions in Britain and beyond in Africa, Asia and the Americas have denounced the privatised system whereby a standardised and scripted curriculum is delivered by teachers following lesson plans on a tablet. The Pearson company promotes a neoliberal education market that's bad news for teachers and children alike. Its influence is wholly negative. - http://www.morningstaronline.co.uk/a-dd21-Educations-not-a-commodity#.WQvtPlV9600 Most CU topical postings are now made to Whatsapp via the Whatsapp-style link with a caption.
