ANC statement on ruling that President must provide reasons for reshuffle

This judgment signifies unfettered encroachment of the judiciary into the realm
of the executive - pandering to the whims of the opposition who want to
co-govern with the popularly elected government through the courts.

The Constitution confers upon the President powers to constitute his Cabinet
without imposing an obligation upon him to consult opposition parties in the
exercise of this discretionary function.

To read into the Constitution that the President must explain himself on the
composition of the National Executive to the opposition is to use the judiciary
to police political decisions and sets a very worrisome precedent.

De Klerk Insists He's Not Guilty Of Apartheid Crimes

Challenged on his moral authority to criticise Mr Zuma over ties to the Gupta
business family, Mr De Klerk said he was cleared by the post-apartheid TRC.
"There was no atrocities executed by order of me, I was never part of any
decision justifying or authorising any gross violations of human rights," he
said.

But last year the Anti-Racist Action Forum laid 22 criminal charges against Mr
De Klerk, including the 1990 Sebokeng massacre of 27 people, the deaths of the
Cradock Four, and the 1991 Daveyton massacre where 13 people died. The
notorious Vlakplaas Farm death squad also operated on Mr De Klerk's watch. -

US Soldier Killed In Raid On Al-Shabab Guerillas

The US Africa Command said yesterday that an unnamed individual from an
unidentified branch of the US armed forces was killed in Thursday night's
attack on Barii, 40 miles west of Mogadishu. A Somali intelligence official
confirmed the raid, saying that helicopters had dropped troops near Dare Salaam
village in an attempt to capture or kill extremists.

Al-Shabab's Shahada news agency claimed: "An air landing operation by US
special forces was thwarted ... and a number of their soldiers were killed and
wounded." -

Chemical Attack A False Flag, Says Russian Minister

"Russia has all the irrefutable evidence that this is a pure provocation on the
part of individuals and structures that are not interested in achieving peace
on Syrian soil," said peace negotiator Alexander Lavrentyev.

On Thursday, Syria, Russia, Iran, Turkey and Western-backed insurgent groups
meeting in Astana agreed to establish "de-escalation zones" in Syria to bolster
the patchy ceasefire. Mr Lavrentyev said that aircraft of the US-led bombing
coalition would be excluded from those zones, and from now on may only attack
Isis in eastern Syria and Iraq. -
