SACP doesn't support unconstitutional means to change the Constitution

The action announced on Monday by the Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane
instructing parliament to amend the Constitution, so as to change the
mandate of the Reserve Bank, is beyond her legal power or authority. The
remedial action will violate the principle of separation of powers. It will
amount either to usurping the constitutional law, making it a function of
parliament, or subordinating it to her dictates.

The real problem with the Reserve Bank is its mandate to 'protect the value
of the currency'. The SACP believes that this problem must be solved by
constitutional means. - http://www.sacp.org.za/main.php?ID=6222

A family that fought for equality

It is a family whose history of struggle stretches back to the beginnings of
Mahatma Gandhi's satyagraha philosophy of passive resistance, through the
armed struggle to the United Democratic Front and then South Africa's
democratic dispensation.

Shanthie received one of her banning orders while attending the trial of
Bram Fischer, who, in 1966, was accused of sabotage and the contravention of
the Suppression of Communism Act.

SAMWU denies blame for fire at Mangaung City Hall

Bloemfontein - SAMWU members were not responsible for the fire that engulfed
the City Hall in Mangaung, its provincial chairperson Congo Matshepe told
News24 on Wednesday night. "We were waiting in the city centre for national
leadership. While waiting peacefully, police dispersed workers by firing
rubber bullets and stun grenades."

Matshepe said, after workers had dispersed, they noticed that a fire was
burning at the city hall. "The police fuelled everything. When police
started firing rubber bullets, a few minutes later, we started seeing that a
fire was burning." -

CP Slams Ombudswoman's Bank Reform Call

The SACP initially welcomed Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane's report on
Monday that the Absa bank should repay a 1.25 billion-rand Reserve Bank loan
that was immediately reinvested in government bonds paying 16 times the
interest.

But yesterday, party spokesman Alex Mashilo said her recommendation that the
Reserve Bank's mission should be to grow the economy - not protect the value
of the rand - was an "unconstitutional" bid to change the constitution. -

Saudi Arabia's King Salman yesterday made his son the heir to the throne and
deputy prime minister. Mohammed bin Salman was named as the new crown
prince. He will retain the defence portfolio while taking on the deputy PM
role.

Mr bin Salman has ruled out dialogue with Iran, pushed for the blockade of
Qatar this month and led the war in Yemen that has killed thousands of

Fernandez Launches New Left Alliance

Former Argentinian president Cristina Fernandez launched a new electoral
coalition at a huge rally in Buenos Aires on Tuesday. Speaking to a packed
Arsenal de Llavallol football stadium, Ms Fernandez pledged to fight the
unpopular austerity programme of President Mauricio Macri, elected in
October 2015.

"We need to put a limit on this government," Ms Fernandez said. "I call for
a citizens' unity, the unity of all Argentinians." An estimated 30,000
