8,500 workers to be retrenched

by AngloGold Ashanti

The Young Communist League of South Africa (Ufasimba) in Moses Kotane
Province (NW), notes with dismay and disgust the recent alert by the
so-called third biggest Mining Company in the world "ANGLOGOLD ASHANTI" that
seek to subject 8500 workers into poverty and unemployment through
retrenchment. The YCLSA in Moses Kotane condemns this brutality against
workers.

Our expectations from AngloGold are nothing but the development of
communities which creation of jobs is one of that. The planned retrenchment
is aimed at maximizing profits for the shareholders at the expense of the
poor and working class. That blood sucking capitalist tendencies will at all
times be rejected by YCLSA in Moses Kotane.

As per the clarion call of Karl Marx for the workers to unite, we call on
all labour unions within AngloGold to collectively challenge this onslaught
aimed at increasing the level of poverty in our country. The fight must be
fought in and outside the boardrooms. It has to be joined by the masses on
the streets and sending an unambiguous message that capitalism is a
merciless system that must be dismantled and be buried for good.

YCLSA reminds the conveyer belts of capitalism - Board members of AngloGold
- that any retrenchments of over 10 % of company employees are no subjected
only to section 189 but an outspread consultation through Section 52 of the
MPRDA with DMR. The self-proclaimed messiah who wants to Save SA but
failing to save job losses in AngloGold, Sipho Pityana, must be confronted
with a reality that he failed in his duties as the Chairperson of AGA board
and ensure that there are no job losses occurring under his watch. Under his
leadership, the company has been lacking in full compliance with the mining
charter. Whilst he is enjoying tea & biscuits with the likes of Sisi
Nosipho January-Bardill and Dave Hodgson in their Social, Ethics and
Sustainable Development should never be reduced to skepsells mentality
committees, the communities around AngloGold has been inhaling dust with no
real benefits from the Mines.

The YCLSA in Moses Kotane supports the call by the NUM Youth Structure to
take the fight right to the doorstep of AngloGold at 76 Rahima Moosa Street,
Newtown, Johannesburg. We will without fear of contradiction rally all the
masses to be with young reds and the youth battalions of NUM.
