Syrian Communist Party (Unified) Presentation given in London, 22 July 2017 Contribution to seminar on Kurdistan Comradely greetings, We thank you for inviting us to present a statement on the position of our party on the Kurdish issue in Syria. We want to explain to you that the issues related to the Kurdish brothers in the countries mentioned in your invitation vary from country to country. In Syria these issues are characterized by the fact that there is no such thing as a Kurdish national issue. The Kurdish Citizens in Syria are an Integral part of the Syrian national fabric and they are Syrian citizens in every sense of the word. They are equal in rights and duties with the rest of the constituents of the Syrian society, such as Arabs, Turkmen, Assyrians and others. They have the same rights and duties as any other Syrian citizen. Their problems and demands are almost the same as for the Arab citizens of the population of the Al-Jazira area in the north-eastern region of Syria in the past. Some Syrian authorities put bureaucratic obstacles to the naturalization of a section of the Kurdish brothers under the pretext of their Illegal entry to Syria from Turkey. Our party fought for the granting of Syrian citizenship to those who deserve it among the Kurds. Our party demanded the cancellation of the 1962 census of AJ-Jazira area. The documents of the 10th Congress of the party held in 2006 affirmed the following "To accelerate the resolution of the problem of the census in AJ-Hasakah province, to grant citizenship to those deprived of it in the 1962 census, and to recognize the cultural rights of the Kurdish people within the framework of citizenship" These obstacles continued for several years and were removed by a decree issued by the President of the Republic. The consequences of those obstacles were resolved in a friendly spirit. Many Kurds occupy Important positions in the state for example in the Council of Minister, the People's Assembly, trade unions, federations and local administration as citizens and not on the basis of racial, ethnic, religious or sectarian affiliation. There are undoubtedly demands of the Kurdish brothers in particular in our country such as the demand for the expansion of cultural rights which does not meet any objection by the Syrian people; or the demand for increased financial allocations through the local administration of population in Al-Jazira. As everyone knows this is linked to the problems of the Syrian economy which is at present facing the blockade and sanctions imposed by the colonial states that support terrorism and claim to be concerned for the Syrian Kurds It is known that there are several parties in the country that are active among the Kurdish people and most of them are patriotic forces that uphold the unity of the country, and struggle to abolish the 1962 census, for full rights of citizenship, and guaranteeing the cultural rights of the Kurdish people There is also a good number of Kurdish comrades In our Syrian Communist Party (United) who are committed to these positions and policies of the party. In addition it is useful to say that in such a situation of coexistence between Arabs and Kurds, no sane person can think for a moment of secession and the formation of an independent national entity, because it would then be an artificial entity that will not survive. Also it does not represent an aspiration of the Syrian Kurds who regard the principle of citizenship embraced by the Syrian state as the guarantor of democracy, human rights and the preservation of the components of the Syrian pluralistic society.
