SADTU Teachers at Work, with logo, smaller.jpg SADTU Western Cape Media Statement, 10 August 2017 SADTU Western Cape Concerned About Increase in Violence in Schools The Union has noted with concern, that there has been an increase in violence at our schools, directed at Educators, Support staff and Learners. These acts of violence include shooting in and around education institutions, attacks on educator and support staff and violence directed at our learners at school, and when they travel to and from their respective institutions. In the fourth quarter of 2016 there were 33 incidents of gang violence, 134 incidents of abuse and 14 incidents of trauma reported to the Western Cape Education Department (WCED). We are of the firm belief that all employers have a responsibility to protect their employees from violence and secure their safety at the workplace. Hence we are calling on all employers to fulfil their legislative responsibility. We further want to express the fact that the interest of the child is paramount and guaranteed in our Constitution which needs to be adhered to by all in society. In the first quarter of 2017 the following statistic was recorded by the WCED: Violence on Educators Statistics for 01 January - March 2017 Community Member on Educator Learner on Educator Parent on Educator TOTAL January 3 4 1 8 February 3 13 0 16 March 3 22 3 28 TOTAL 9 39 4 52 The union has a strong view that schools are Community assets and should be places of learning and teaching therefore they should be free of violence. Quality Education is firmly established on the principles of respect, tolerance and non violence. We further believe that communities should zealously protect these principles. In the light of attacks on the educators, supports staff and learners, SADTU is advancing a call to the provincial government to put in place plans to ensure that all schools are safe. We are calling upon the SAPS to increase visible patrolling at our schools and for members of SAPS to adopt schools to ensure a safe school environment.
