[cid:[email protected]] COSATU Johannesburg Local, Media Release, 04 September 2017 DA/EFF Mayor: Victimising SAMWU members and stopping citizens' 6000-litres of water COSATU demand suspended workers and 6000-litres back! COSATU Johannesburg Local is dismayed by the news that the Mayor of the City of Johannesburg has opened a case against members of SAMWU - the militant affiliate of COSATU - and then proceeded to suspend these workers. As the Johannesburg COSATU Local we condemn this act of victimising the workers and the insult of putting them on suspension. These workers pose no threat. They should be servicing the community of Johannesburg. The Mayor has also stopped the 6000 litres of water per household that the citizens of Johannesburg have previously been supplied with, free of charge. As the Federation of the working class it is our place and our duty to point out that the stopping of the monthly issue of 6000 litres of water will put workers into further debt while they continue to be frustrated and exploited by the bourgeoisie at the workplace. We therefore call upon the City Mayor to reverse his unjust ruling with immediate effect, otherwise the might of the workers will be unleashed, the workers will withdraw their labour power, and the Mayor had better brace himself for a good fight. We demand our free water back, and return to work of SAMWU members with immediate effect! As the Federation, we will be found in the trenches dealing with the evil regime that has taken hold of our City. Workers are first and foremost members of the community. This unjust rule affects workers directly. COSATU Johannesburg Local says to the entire working class, and to our Alliance partners, that this unjust DA/EFF coalition regime needs to be replaced with "the proletariat organized as the ruling class" - as soon as possible!
