SACCAWU Press Statement, 11 October 2017

Settlement of the Makro Strike

The strike by more than 5 000 SACCAWU members has now been concluded on the
basis of a collective agreement on substantive terms and conditions of
employment. The agreement covers the following key areas:
Wage Increase:
1. An increase of 8.0% or R 600-00 per month, whichever is the greater for
categories 1 and 2 for year 1;
2.     An increase of 8.5% or R3.08 increase per hour for category 3 for year 1;
3. An increase of 8% or R630 per month, whichever is the greater for
categories 1 and 2 for year 2;
4. An increase of 9% or R3.23 increase per hour whichever is the greater
for category 3 for year 2;
Hours of Work for Category 3:
* An increase in the guaranteed monthly scheduled working hours to 150
with effect from 1 November 2017.
Category 3 is in the main comprised of workers that through engagement between
the Company and the Union; have been converted from Labour Brokers supply and
casuals, into permanent status. Backpay for this category of workers also
includes payment for the increase in the guaranteed monthly scheduled working
hours, from the 1st of April. Engagements for gradual phased integration and
parity, are to be undertaken on the secondary issues process currently underway.
The Union salutes members for being resolute and disciplined during their two
week strike which had commenced on Friday the 22nd of September. We also wish
to convey our sense of gratitude to our Federation, the Congress of South
African Trade Unions and affiliated Unions for demonstrating concrete forms of
solidarity during the Strike. We further acknowledge solidarity demonstrated by
members of the South African Communist Party as well as members of other
Alliance formations and Civil Society Organs, including customers. We equally
salute UNI Africa and in particular UNI Africa Massmart Trade Union Alliance
that took some time from its own meeting held recently in Johannesburg to join
the picket lines and pledged solidarity.
We particularly wish to pay homage to one particular customer (whose name we
will withhold out of respect, in case she may not want her name disclosed) who
after being forced by circumstances to shop at Makro at Germiston, went
directly to the picket line to explain her situation, pledged her support to
workers and called on the company to treat them with decency. We salute this
heroine!
This relentless vigour and disciplined militancy from our members and the Union
is also informed and premised from the devotion to thwart all efforts of
trade-union-free and unilateralism offensive of Walmart-Massmart (under which
Makro falls or to which it belongs); as already subtly introduced and equally
resisted currently and in not so distant past.
This clearly proves that workers united will never be defeated.
