Court Rules That Communist Activist Timol Was Murdered

SA anti-apartheid campaigner and communist Ahmed Timol was murdered by police,
the High Court in Pretoria ruled yesterday, 46 years after his death. Judge
Billy Mothle said Mr Timol was assaulted and tortured from his arrest until his
death.

"Timol did not jump out of the window of room 1026, but was either pushed out
of the window, or from the roof," the judge said. "Thus he did not commit
suicide but was murdered." Judge Mothle said Jan Rodriguez should be
investigated as a murder suspect. - https://tinyurl.com/ybao6pr8

Hamas and Fatah Sign New Unity Deal

Palestine's Fatah and Hamas parties signed a deal in Cairo yesterday to bring
the occupied West Bank and besieged Gaza Strip under one authority. The
breakthrough in unity after 10 years of schism came after two days of talks in
the Egyptian capital.

Egyptian Intelligence Minister Khalid Fawzi presided over the signing by Hamas
representative Saleh al-Arouri and Fatah negotiator Azzam al-Ahmed. The deal
was a reactivation of the unity pact signed in Cairo in May 2011 that was
fiercely opposed by occupying Israel. - https://tinyurl.com/ychmdq3z

US Leaves Unesco for 'Anti-Israel Attitudes'

The US announced yesterday it was leaving UN heritage agency Unesco over its
alleged "anti-Israel bias." Spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the US would
downgrade its membership to "permanent observer" status."

The US stopped payments to Unesco in 2011 after the agency allowed Palestine to
join and now owes $550 million (£420m). The agency has been critical of
Israel's illegal excavations of sites on occupied Palestinian territory,
including in East Jerusalem, as well as its demolition of Byzantine and Arab
buildings in the ancient city. - https://tinyurl.com/ybw7jq88

Basic Education Portfolio Committee Notes All Initiatives to Ensure Safety in
Schools

Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Basic Education received presentations on
safety in schools in the country where bullying and corporal punishment
dominated the agenda. Acting Committee Chairperson, Ms Pinky Mokoto, said,
"There is no way that learners can learn when the environment is contaminated
by violence."

The Committee noted that the Department of Basic Education has received a
notice of a strike by SADTU on Tuesday. The Committee urged stakeholders to
find a solution before commencement of the National Senior Certificate
examinations. - https://tinyurl.com/yaqr49bo

For-profit education hits underfunded public school system

A new case study of low-fee private schools analyses the trend of for-profit
education in Nepal. According to the authors, chronic underfunding of the
public system is one of the main causes. This weakens public education and
facilitates the entry of other providers.

Private schools surveyed largely employ untrained teachers with a high turnover
ratio. But in Nepal, almost 1 in 5 of all school-going children are now
enrolled in for-profit private schools. The result is a deepening inequality
and segregation of society. - https://tinyurl.com/y7xyegsd

Alleged Abuse of Children at AB Xuma Primary School in Gauteng Province

The ANC Women's League is saddened by reports alleging that around 83 children
were sexually abused by a 57-year-old man who worked as a security guard at AB
Xuma Primary School in Orlando East Soweto. The ANCWL applauds the parents who
reported this matter to the police. They acted swiftly. The alleged perpetrator
was arrested.

The ANCWL calls its supporters, members and society at large to provide support
to the victims and their parents/guardians and attend the bail hearing on
October 18. - https://tinyurl.com/y9nw7gl3

Rebels Agree Peace but not with the Government

3 rebel groups signed a Russian-Egyptian brokered truce in Damascus yesterday.
But Egypt's official Mena news agency said the deal with the Army of Islam,
Jaysh al-Ababil and Aknaf Beit al-Maqdis did not include the Syrian government.
The agreement covers the Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp.

On Wednesday, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem called Turkey's
incursion into Idlib province to support the Free Syrian Army "illegal." He
also said the Kurdish YPG militia was "drunk on US assistance and support. But
this assistance won't last forever." - https://tinyurl.com/ya38lcz7

Remarks by President Jacob Zuma on the occasion of the Zambia-South Africa
Business Forum, Lusaka, Zambia

We have noted continued positive growth of trade between our sister Republics.
We cannot overemphasise the urgent need for our economies to break out of the
commodity dependence towards a more diversified export base. We need to see
increasing activities on the manufacturing side.

In this regard, South Africa has placed great importance on implementing an
outward investment-led approach across the continent. Intra-African investments
are critical to Africa's future economic growth. Let us make our liberation
heroes proud in both countries. - https://tinyurl.com/yd84fmkt
