Not every problem can be solved at the source. Systems compensate for problems with incoming (and outgoing) data all the time. I think it would be nice to at least allow users to choose for themselves, or make them aware when they make a post that there are potentially duplicate sites already in the system, so that those who do consciously try to align with the larger social "good" can more easily do so.
