I think both are helpful. In fact, CollaborativeRank supports both. (To see the top experts in someone's links, just use the query via:... and look at the ranking of experts.) In essence, this is the difference between personalized and non-personalized search/recommendations. BTW, it's interesting to note that Google ranks people also through pagerank, though this doesn't seem to upset too many people. Of course, the ranking is not shown explicitly, but it would be interesting to see. Try for example this query on Google to get some approximation of the ranking of people in CSE @ University of Washington: allinurl:homes site:cs.washington.edu As for the idea of turning everything into a game, I think it can yield good results. But there is no reason to take such a ranking too seriously. It's just a game. And a game that can yield useful information, both personalized and non-personalized.
