Two ways to deal with spam: * TrustRank: http://www.vldb.org/conf/2004/RS15P3.PDF Perhaps one can start by manually identifying a small set of trusted users whose trust can then be progagated along some social network (e.g.,obtained through inbox subscriptions) using TrustRank. * collaborative filtering Of course, in an environment where users cannot create many accounts easily (e.g., in a university or company), then some simpler "social" methods can work too.
