It can't distinguish between spam non-members and legitimate non-
members, so I get a message and a whine for each user.
Unfortunately, I don't think we're going to be allowed to run the
mail server in the future. So it'll be Groups unless there's some
other reasonable thing out there.

Can't you just block postings from non-members, and white list any
legitimate non-member postings, like this one (which goes via Gmane).
In my experience that limits the moderation work to almost nothing.
Using a service like Yahoo might solve the spam problem, but as others
have said, they add their own to each message instead. Of course, with
your special relationship to Yahoo, maybe you can get them to turn off
the ads for this list.
