It is not necessary to register at Yahoo in order to subscribe to a Yahoo group. yahoo distinguishes between subscribers and members. To subscribe, simply send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You will then receive emails, but not be able to access the message archives, unless they are set to allow public access.
A Yahoo group still requires one or more moderators , otherwise it becomes overrun with spam. You can share the workload however. Yahoo seems to make a reasonable job of filtering spam going into Yahoo web-mail accounts, but doesn't filter the spam going through groups.
You could also consider Google groups, but I think the moderation question
is perennial.
