I wrote a nice Greasemonkey script for that (attached) - you'll like it if you need the character count. :)
It would be nice seeing this functionality native in del.icio.us posting form, especially because it takes 5 minutes to write. Hell, you can even use this script.
Even more nice would be an explanation why the service sometimes eats some characters from the end even if the field is not more than 256 characters long? Because of multibyte characters in between?
