I only joined del.icio.us a couple of weeks ago but I have already
found it an invaluable tool to help manage my bookmarks, especially
with the integrated Firefox buttons. Regardless, as a new user I just
wanted to voice some suggestions and possible future improvements to
make del.icio.us even better. Forgive me if any or all of these ideas
have been suggested before.
- I really like the concept of tags.. (I've been organizing my
MP3/FLAC music collection through a similar idea for years. gmail does
the same with labels etc..) And being able to view the tags as a
cloud is a wonderful concept and makes finding data through a visual
means quick and easy. Why not expand upon the "larger font represents
more important" concept and expand it to colors as well? I could then
group all my vacation or travel related tags to be green and all my
financial related tags to be red in the cloud.. Maybe it could be a
property of the bundle; i.e. all the tags in my financial bundle could
be defined as red. anyway, that along with the larger/smaller fonts
would make finding tags in the cloud easier and even more visual.
- I think that tag management will become a problem as I add more and
more bookmarks. I know you can rename and delete tags but I think
this could be improved upon by a "web 2.0" app that would allow you to
manipulate the tags as a cloud with intuitive mouse clicks. For
example, in this cloud app you could click and drag a tag to another
tag to rename it or select multiple tags and delete them.. Or select
multiple tags, right click, and change the color of those
tags/bundles, expounding on the idea above. Or double clicking on the
bundles would expand or collapse the tags within it... The ideas here
are endless and I guess it would be some sort of cloud desktop app
that could be integrated with the browser to navigate easier through
the web.
- Another random idea is how each tag is "weighted".. The weight
(i.e. font size) could represent multiple things. You could sort the
cloud to increase the weight of tags that have been clicked on the
most, in addition to the current method. And this could go hand and
hand with the tag management concepts so that you could remove unused
or seldom used tags easier.
Anyway, sorry for the length and rambling of this message and my newb
perspective... I'm sure many of these have been thought about before,
but I just wanted to brainstorm and get some of my ideas out there to
help improve del.icio.us and my web experience.
