As Gary and I discovered, for a lucid container you need to follow the suggestion here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/launchpad/+bug/974584/comments/1 - stop lxc - on the host edit /var/lib/lxc/lptests/fstab to append: none dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0 - start lxc
