A couple of further comments.

A quick Google search did not find reports that seem to match exactly
what you are reporting.  As an alternative to the previous suggestion
(since it might not duplicate itself for some time) you may need to
look at the log files.  

After rebooting you will probably need to use sudo or su to root to
gain access, but from a shell go to /var/log, the most likely log files
to have information of relevance are messages, syslog and secure.
Look for the date and time at which the high cpu usage occurred.  See
what is listed and if anything looks like it was running at the time
or other information reported.  Since it is just before the shutdown
it should be relatively easy to find.
