I have a 2001 Honda Insight, the first hybrid Honda released in the United States (they have had them in Japan for a while). At the time the local Honda dealer was having a hard time moving them (this is Texas, after all), so I got an incredible deal on it. Soon afterwards, the Toyota Prius became a hot seller, though the Insight never caught on as much. I can see why, too -- the Insight is a two-seater with almost no cargo space: a great commuter vehicle, but impractical when going to the garden shop or the grocery.
Honda no longer sells the Insight (if I recall correctly), but has moved their Civic line to the hybrid system. A hybrid automobile, if you will recall, is actually a highly fuel efficient gasoline engine (and therefore not too peppy) with an electric motor assist (which supplies all the pep when needed). Were I a young family looking to buy a Honda today, there is no question that the Honda Civic Hybrid would be my first choice. It has all the comfort, performance, and engineering of Honda's Civic line, but gets 50 miles to the gallon of gas. A no-brainer.
Why did I purchase the Insight? "They" have been promising electric cars for decades, and I was sorta counting on having one when I could finally afford it. I don't care about the environment, or anything like that (okay, maybe a little :-) ), I just wanted an electric car.
Now I want a hovercraft.
