I tried to run yum update this morning. It got almost finished, then
complained that the kernel it had found was for ppc64 -- this is on a G3
iBook, and I don't know what those had in August 2002.

I tried yum update kernel, and it seemed to take, but reported it found no
bootloader, and couldn't configure the kernel. rpm -q yaboot gets me an
rpm designation.

I tried yum clean, then yum update again. It still hangs on a complaint
that the kernel is for ppc64 architecture. yum update --exclude kernel
fails. yum update exception=kernel fails.

I see nothing else in man yum that even suggests what to do.
