First - Hello to everyone on the list!  I am new (as you well may have gathered) and will probably not be a very active person on the list simply because I work in the space industry and get sent everywhere to do everything.  So I'm not home a lot and I really do not have a lot of time to call my own.  That said though - HI!  :-)

Ok, some general ramblings:

  1. I've had to re-install YDL several times because of either mistakes I've made or mistakes YDL has made.  I've noticed that there are some problems with the installer.  These are:
    1. If you attempt to re-install due to an error, YDL's installer dies when it attempts to re-install selinux.
    2. You usually have to completely wipe out what was there and re-install everything because YDL, if it hits an error (such as a file already exists) it just dies.  Not always mind you, but in one of the billions of possible combinations that are possible when doing an installation.  So, sorry - but I can't give specifics.  Just that I selected CUSTOM and after I was through YDL just died.  I wound up reformatting the hard drive and re-installing YDL.
  2. When you boot from the YDL CD and you are trying to re-install the yaboot stuff (via the instructions on the web page for v4.01) it:
    1. Always seems to put "2,/vmlinux" after anything you type in which makes it impossible to put in "cd-linux root=/dev/hdXX" because it always becomes "cd-linux root=/dev/hdXX2,/vmlinux" which it then complains about.
Some good things:
  1. YDL runs A LOT FASTER than OS X on my laptop.  In fact, I've taken OS X off of my system completely because I continued to be frustrated by some of the just plain slow things that were happening on my system.  Basically, I tried to run Apache under OS X and found that, just like OS 7->9 if you ran a web server under it the entire thing just bogged down.  Under YDL though, there isn't any slow down.  No lag - nothing but extremely quick response.
  2. I have been saying this for the last couple of years - why doesn't Apple just dump OS X and go with Linux?  OS X is (if I remember correctly) Copeland revisited.  If Apple would just dump all of their software endeavors OS wise, run one of the Mac emulators that allow OS 7->9 to run native, and just use Linux I think they'd be way out ahead of the rest of the world again.  After all, look at IBM, HP, etc....they have realized that it takes less time to develop what they need if they just go with a world wide development package.  You also have far better support because of the hundreds of thousands of people who can either report bugs or work on them.
Anyway!  Gotta go but again - hi to everyone and if anyone has an answer for #2 above I'd appreciate hearing from you.  I haven't reformatted everything yet but I can't get YDL to come back up because a friend inadvertantly reset the startup disk via Mac OS 9.  So my main problem presently is just to get yaboot to boot back up the linux partition.

Later!
