Very odd, root and branch, very odd indeed : I did that. No change; so I
logged out and back in -- and had to tell it to use Gnome; so I rebooted
-- and had to tell it to use Gnome; and yet nano -w /etc/sysconfig/desktop
does show DESKTOP="GNOME" ....
