thanks for all, what i did, following advices from 
fr.comp.os.linux.configuration :

add the following line to /etc/fstab :
none                    /proc/bus/usb           usbdevfs noauto         0 0

mount /proc/bus/usb by:
$ sudo mount -t usbfs none /proc/bus/usb

verifying it is well mounted:
$ grep usb /proc/mounts
none /proc/bus/usb usbfs rw 0 0

now usbview see everyting on the "usb bus" and i can make use of :
xsane, kooka gimp (thru xsane)


i think the major prob here was due to hardware probing because it didn't see 
the added scanner

one thing remain to me : i'm unable to mount automatically an external firewire 
disk (hardware probing is hanging if it is powered up at startup) but rather 
only manually...

i'd like having that working automatically (firewire external disk)
