I believe you can also add the line:

   defaultos=macosx

to the /etc/yaboot.conf file. Then run:

   /sbin/ybin

to commit the change. That should still give you the choice of OS, with
OSX being the default.

Correct. In fact, using the OSX "Startup Disk" wipes the firmware setting, disabling one from even seeing the yaboot screen at all and forcing the use of the OPTION key.

Not only that, but the OSX disk was already listed as the boot disk, however, that wouldn't mean anything to yaboot. Only after selecting "X" to start MacOS would that setting matter. In fact, If I wanted to boot into OS9 I could select that and when yaboot offers its options "X" would presumably result in "9" booting.

Not to complain since the above advice helped me fix my problem and this is not the "newbies" list, but I would only add for any lurker who IS a newbie, make sure you do the above steps as "root". Also I was a bit puzzled by "run /sbin/ybin" I had no idea of what directory to go to to execute the command via a command line but, I was able to find it via browsing "file system" and clicking on ybin The result was a brief flash of a window on the screen and I couldn't tell if anything had happened...i.e. no "results" screen. But, when I rebooted the machine...voila!
