Invetigate your cisco port settings. Are your two machines running same speed and duplex? Use ethtool or miitool to find out.
If not, hardcode to 100/Full.

Yes.

I did not try the crossover cable because the machines are far from each other.
However, I've tried with putting a 10Mbits hub in between and the transfert is
ok.
