Hi all:

Regarding the md5sum, I hope that everyone is aware that within OS X Tiger invoking the md5sum algorithm means:

$md5 filename

I don't know why Apple chose to do that; you should know however, that they did.

A discussion regarding these changes by Apple occurred on either this or the newbie list a while back.

Best of Luck...

Hey Hal,

I checked the md5sum and burned the disc twice, with the same results. Has anyone else downloaded the CD (read: not DVD) version of the 5.0.1 and successfully installed it anywhere?

Sounds like the CD is corrupt. Try verifying that the SHA1SUM or the MD5SUM for the image you have match that of YDL 5.0.1.

If they do indeed match, then I would try re-burning the images.

If you can get to the yaboot screen, that generally means it's going to work with your computer. I remember before PPC linux supported the latest, and last, PowerBook revision. Most of the PPC distros I tried wouldn't even boot the computer.

I looked through my notebook- it is not there... I'll keep looking but....

I did the install on a system with a video card to be a headless system, then I moved the disk to a system which had the NVRAM changed.

I don’t suppose you know what needed to be changed in the nvram? I’ve already changed the boot-device setting. Is there something else?

I had similar issues on older YDL revisions. I did not find a way to do a headless install, (An install for a headless system: Yes)

For the Headless install some items in the nvram had to be changed.

Hola all,

Has anyone tried to do a headless install of 5.0.1 on an Xserve yet? I have a dual G5 that I’m trying to put 5.0.1 on and it’s giving me fits. I get to the boot prompt, but it shows no kernels to boot from or to install from. I get this no matter what I type at the boot prompt:

:2,/vmlinux, Unable to open file, Invalid device

I’ve check summed my downloads, but I may re-burn disc 1 to see if it makes a difference.
