Thank you, that was some very useful info; I didn't know about the runlevels.  It's a lot nicer to work in an environment where I can read what I'm typing, haha.  Well I was able to edit the XF86Config file but it didn't help.  I also ran Xautoconfig but it didn't change anything either.  As far as using Xconfigurator, I checked the rpm list and found that it was not on my Xserve, so I tried an installation via ftp with the only link I could find:
 
ftp://ftp.yellowdoglinux.com/pub/yellowdog/Xconfigurator-4.2.4-6.src.rpm
 
but the link seems to be down.  Is there another place I could get Xconfigurator from?  Either way I have my doubts that Xconfigurator can even solve my problem.  Has anyone had similar screen problems to this?

Since you’re relatively new to Linux, welcome!  Here’s one of the best lessons I’ve learned so far.  The command line is your best friend.  Start in run level 3, find a couple good articles on configuring X and start trying to do it yourself instead of using GUI tools.  Nothing against Terrasoft, but damn if I ever see GUI tools that do the job right when it comes to configuring things.  BTW, its extremely bad practice to log in as root on the GUI side of things, or some I’ve been told.  My RHCE instructor told me once that if ever saw a contractor working for him login as root at the GUI he would never hire them back!  So, just because its good practice, once you get into run level 3, make yourself another user, then just su to root from then on.  Anywho, way off topic.  Sorry.  Good luck!< /SPAN>

These are the sort of things you need to use the root account for.
