For what it is worth, I am using Ubuntu 7.10 on my PS3 and I am very pleased with it. I appreciate that this is a YDL forum and I would have stuck with YDL, but Ubuntu used later kernels and libraries and I needed to use it in order to take advantage of the RSX based accelerated Xorg, which I am very pleased with (and will never, never update my firmware so that I can continue using it).

In addition, I found the (Ubuntu) repositories available with synaptic and apt-get to be much, much more complete than any YUM based repositories from Fedora/YDL. (I have tried numerous yum.conf variations). In my experience, there is no comparison. This is too bad, as I would like to go back to YDL 6, which has better PPC support. With Ubuntu, I almost never needed to do a Google search for an app or window manager. The repos even have support for GNUstep, which took all day to install on a YDL machine.

cheers,

Hi Kai:

I was always an admirer of Debian Linux, however like Red Hat (and Fedora) Linux they primarily supported Intel and compatbiles. Support for PowerPC systems was with them, an afterthought which they yielded to depending upon the market penetration of computers using the PowerPC chip. When Apple used the PowerPC they and others, like Ubuntu (a Debian variant) supported the machines that were in the marketplace. When Apple announced that they were no longer supporting the PowerPC, Ubuntu and others eventually decided it was time to move on. Some announcements addressing Ubuntu's decision are presented here:

Yellow Dog Linux was from it's inception by Terra Soft Solutions always designed to be a Linux running only on PowerPC systems and to maximize features which only PowerPC systems have. As far as being the premiere Linux variant for the PowerPC I believe that the experience and committed focus of their efforts working with PowerPC systems demonstrates their value.

The other larger half of Linux which runs on Intel and other compatibles has libraries available which vastly outmatch nearly anything available for PowerPC based Linux, let alone YDL. However, if the source isn't processor specific chances are that it can be recompiled within YDL and run within PowerPC systems which were Apple made or could be recompiled to work in the currently available Cell, which is the heart of the PS3.

All the best...

Hey everybody,

I'm an old Debian user and I wonder which benefits YDL (Red Hat based)
provides in comparison with other distros. A friend of mine installed a
ppc build of Ubuntu on his PS3 and as I'm used to Debians apt I think
about to give it a try. The problem is I don't know if there are other
reasons like hardware support issues which are pro YDL.

May be a developer/maintainer of YDL or a experienced user can compare
YDL to "normal" distros. Why should I use YDL instead of Fedora or Ubuntu?
