Hello again

I have been able to get linux to start by in 2 different ways.

The first way is to insert CD 1 of the yellowdog linux 4 CDs and hold the "C" key until the machine boots from the CD. The installer appears with all the usual installation options as well as the two yaboot linux startup options I made. I get into linux fine through here by just selecting the linux starup option I had set as default (2.6.10-1.ydl.1 kernel).

The second ways is by following the instructions at this web site:

http://penguinppc.org/bootloaders/yaboot/doc/yaboot-howto.shtml/ch9.en.shtml

under the title "9.2 Loading Yaboot". I strt my machine and hold the Command-Option-o-f keys and the open firmware screen appears at the prompt I enter:

0 > boot hd:2,yaboot

and yellowdog linux starts.

BUT I dont want to have to do this everytime to use linux, I had yaboot set up and now it is gone. Is there anything I can do to get yaboot running again so I can choose which OS to boot each time I start up?

Thanks for reading.

Subject: Machine boots directly into Mac OS X with no yaboot boot menu
Date: Wed, 01 Jun 2005 13:28:39 +1000

Hey,

I cant start yellowdog linux on my machine anymore, I have no choice and the yaboot menu that usually comes up when I start my machine doesn't even appear. It was working fine last night.

I think what triggered this is the fact that this morning I decided to update Mac OS X from 10.3.8 to 10.3.9 and downloaded the update file from apple. When the download was complete I tried to run the update and got an error -39. I tried again to update with no success and just deleted the update file. After that I tried to reboot and noticed that the yaboot menu didnt appear and Mac OS X loaded straightaway. I shutdown and started the machine and it happened again every time I tried. I need to get to yellowdog linux because my portfolio and other files are saved there.

Here are the details of my machine.

powermac g4 500mhz AGP (I think)

896 Mb RAM

disk0 yellowdog linux

disk1 Mac OS X

Thanks in advance.
