Bill, you have my sincere compassion. Although, Cian's recommendation is something I would normally just agree with, I cannot do so this time. The problem is the design of the Mac 8500 itself. It was constructed with a 604 chip. You can see the details here:
http://macspeedzone.com/archive/html/hardw/by_mac/apple/a/8500_150.html This is not the only problem, unfortunately Bill, for you it does get worse. There is an old article where Kai Staats, the CEO of TSS, is interviewed discussing many details including which Macs YDL 4 will work with. Here is that link: http://www.macnewsworld.com/story/34647.html The section of the interview of interest in this discussion is here: Mac News World: ... will YDL 4 run on ancient Macs that cannot take advantage of OS X? Staats: ... Yellow Dog Linux 4.0 ... supports USB-G3 through dual G5 Power Mac Towers. Using this information let's go back and review the details listed at macspeedzone where the ports are listed. You will see for yourself that there are no USB ports listed at all for this machine. The possibility of adding USB ports via various connections doesn't really help in this case. Although the Mac 8500 can theoretically be upgraded to a G3 or G4, the Mac News World article is clear that YDL 4 was designed to operate with a USB G3 or expressed differently, a native G3 system which originally was constructed containing USB ports. The best option may be to move up to YDL 3 and as long as you have that Mac 8500, that version of YDL may be as high as you can go. Here's the official link from TSS discussing that possibility: http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/support/hardware/others.shtml One last problem, if you click upon the link on that page -- Guide to Installation -- looking for the guide for installing YDL 3.0. It has been removed from that page. However I have a copy if you need it. Now the problem is how to get YDL 3.0? You will have to go to one of the TSS mirrors find the iso of each file download each iso and burn a CD. Each YDL 3.0 iso is 500-600+ MB. You will need a broadband connection to make even one download tolerable. Other problems: The original MacOS which came with that Mac doesn't know about burning CDs. However, if you move up to Mac OS9 that should take care of that problem, also you may need to find a CD rewriteable drive which OS 9 can understand. And you will need to find CD burning software which Mac OS 9 can use. Perhaps the people at Mac Speed Zone can help you there. It would be a good idea to ask them what application you can use which can run a md5sum test so that you can verify that each iso file was downloaded correctly. The md5sum values for each iso is published in the file called md5sum. Bill, here is something you really need to look at clearly. The money you may have to spend just to make it this far may not be worth spending as it just may add up to saving up to purchase a PS 3 with YDL 5 (or the difference may be so close that saving up for the PS3 may actually be better as that system and associated components will maintain their value for a number of years yet. However, these purchases associated with getting the 8500 to do these things well, you alone will be the judge whether it's worth it for you. This particular link: http://yellowdog.open-mirror.com/ will take you to a page where a folder called iso will be present. Just click upon the iso folder and you will be on the webpage where the isos are located in this particular mirror.
