Sony doesn't lock you out of the video RAM; in fact there is already a linux way to access it quite easily. Unfortunately the video ram is designed with a fast write interface but a very slow read interface (wouldn't be needed normally except debugging) making it dubious if little value in practice (hard disk is probably as quick/quicker for larger chunks of 'memory').
