-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Regarding dial-up:
It is really understandable why limiting oneself to it should be avoided if possible. However, if one must use it there is a little reference on tweaking modems I came across which could be useful in that situation. That reference is here: http://www.inboost.com/speed-tweaks/modem-tweaks.html The actual file sizes of .isos available for download are higher, but I chose to consider sending a 3G (for DVD) and 630 M (for CD) size file for illustration purposes. The transmission speeds I considered were 9.6k bits/sec (standard modem), 115k bits/sec (tweaked modem) and 768k bits/sec (basic DSL). I was interested in displaying for easy reference a table of the time necessary to transmit the above file sizes. The results were as follows: 630M 3G standard modem 6.08 days 28.94 days tweaked modem 12.24 hours 2.42 days DSL 1.82 hours 8.68 hours Considerations: The point of DSL is that one can utilize the phone for voice communications while downloading and without affecting the file being downloaded. This cannot be done using dial-up; such a line can do one or the other function not both. I don't believe anyone is content with transmission speeds regardless of their chosen service. As Linux has become increasingly complex as it matches or approaches incorporating features or functions which many find useful, it's files also become larger. I'm not sure what the solution may be, but it isn't dial up. However, if you can't liberate yourself from it at this time then save up for a DVD burner/player and buy the DVD current version of YDL from TSS or you can consider getting the PS3 package from TSS with the current version of YDL pre-loaded and ready to boot from.
