In fact I recall a discussion sometime ago where it was brought up that doing what you are attempting to do (installing from an external USB drive or stick) is not supported. In short, YDL is not designed to work that way.
Furthermore, just to underline the point, in that discussion it was clarified that YDL is designed to boot from internal drives only.
