There are (at least) two separate issues:

1. Inputing unicode:
I don't know what kind of events the frontend receives when facing
special characters.
I'd have expected the gtk frontend to support it but for some reason
this fails too.
I don't have any idea on how to repair this right now.

2. Saving text unicode:
This is broken; but I think I can fix it shortly.
