I think Pango independently has problems with slowness, and they're not related to usage over time. On my system, just skipping to the next line several times (i.e. holding 'j' for a second) lags significantly. I like the solution of a soft release; this definitely seems like the best way to go. I'll try removing Yi's dependencies on my system so that I can install it from scratch, and try to fix any problems that I find.
