I'm OK with having that in addition to some kind of flag, but I want
to have the capability for plugins to function differently if they're
running in an X environment than they would inside a term.

I think vim's approach of basically insisting that plugins run
identically without X is rather shortsighted and hurts UI design by
artificially limiting the programmer's palette.
