Quick note (as I forgot to mention) git checkout 1.2_M3.final will put you into a detached HEAD state. Ok, I see what you're trying to do here. In that case I would look at either git checkout-index or git archive and have a separate directory tree for M3 with local conf sharing a common SSTATE_DIR and DL_DIR and TMP_DIR.
