Hi List,

I wanted to share with you why I believe Yojimbo is superior than Journler
although the last seems to have many more features and is free for personal use!

Journler has nested folders that, to me, detract from the simplicity and
user-friendliness. Also it offers tabs and a bookmarks bar which I think is
really overkill. In how many ways do we want to look at and switch between how
many elements? Please, keep it simple, like Yojimbo. It also has a calendar. Do
we need that? And, tag folders are cooler than smart folders :-).

Journler has more formatting buttons like bullets, quote, ruler, cells. But
actually, these are all OS X features which can be used in Yojimbo as well.
They're in the menu bars. Journler just offers toolbar buttons for them. That's
all.

Then, the more promising differences: Record Audio, Record Video, take
Snapshot. These are QuickTime features with a toolbar button. I can do audio
and video recording in QuickTime (maybe that's Pro only though) and then drop
the result in Yojimbo. Although I must say that after a Yojimbo restart, the
inline video becomes a file icon that is unclickable. It can only be dropped on
QuickTime to see or hear the recording. Is this an unfinished element? It's
really nice to always see or hear a recording.

Maybe having the snapshot button in the toolbar might be easier, although this
can be done in PhotoBooth. In the end these multi-media features didn't win me
over. The Media button is nice but is also an OS X-ready feature. Maybe Yojimbo
should enable it too?

The documents sidebar in Journler might come in handy to quickly switch between
viewing the entry text and the attached files. Yournler has an email button, to
quickly mail an entry with the Subject filled out automatically. Nice. Must be
easy to add to Yojimbo.

The entry panel where you copy from the clipboard appears is in the middle of
the screen which seems to make sense until you realize it blocks more view from
the page where you where copying from. The Journler black panel also has a
design which is less to the point than Yojimbo's.

In Journler I don't like the email-like header for every entry and prefer much
more Yojimbo's elegant milk-style header which nicely displays the used tags.
Also the font drawing in Journler's entry area isn't beautiful. Don't know what
makes it so, but since you're there all the time I want it to be perfect.

So, there you have it. Journler seems to have more whistles and bells but a lot
of them are OS X ready features. Because of these extra's it looks too crowdy,
less to the point than Yojimbo. Yojimbo makes you feel at home much easier and
on top of that it's more safe since it syncs your ever growing data with .Mac.

Greetz,

Rob - Belgium
