I know about rsync; I use it at work to copy PHP files from my development machine to the production server. The essential thing about the syncing done with .Mac and Synctogether is that it happens at the 'record' level rather than the file level (Address Book cards, iCal entries, Yojimbo items). As Sebastian said, rsync, being file-based, is not the right solution here.
