If your fonts look horrible after the latest smart upgrade, do the following:
Kcontrol → Desktop appearance → Fonts. Make sure the anti-aliasing box is checked. Go to advanced. Set "Use sub-pixel hinting: RGB" and "Hinting style: Full". Log out and log in again. The fonts should render okay now.
