Unfortunately I have to abandon this for now. While it works very well on the Openbox window manager, it fails in various ways on some of the others I've tried.
Gnome is utterly hopeless (I hadn't realised how bad that had become - not having run it for years). xfce doesn't return keyboard focus at all. kwin mostly gets it right when running, but doesn't return keyboard focus at startup.
