At the moment I'll continue with piecing together a demo,
because that seems to be low hanging fruit. In the stripdown branch,
I had already reduced the CMakeBuild to the bare minimum, so it seems
feasible to hook the DynTooltip onto the only WidgetPDial which I
retained for the investigation of the Wayland crash.
Indeed, completing this strip-down branch and adding a Demo
for the pop-up/Cairo problem was easy going, after having
figured out how that DynTooltip works.
On my 'stripdown' branch in my Git repo is now a demo,
where the pop-up window is attached to the only WidgetPDial,
which is the "volume" knob (and which uses Custom drawing
with Ciaro now, thanks to Jespers solution!)
How-to: start Yoshimi and turn the "volume" dial
When running under X11 with FLTK 1.5 :
* pop-up is positioned as intended, close to the rotary knob
* BUT Cairo drawing not visible (no red line)
When running under Wayland
* pop-up appears in the middle of the window
* BUT Cairo drawing works: there is a dynamic red line
@Will: what happens on your system? That would be interesting,
since you showed us a screenshot with garbled drawing,
misaligned with the pup-up window, in your setup with
FLTK-1.4 and X11. On my system, I just don't get
any red line at all with X11.
