Unless the database corruption is severe, Entourage will open without rebuilding. The more corrupt it gets the harder it is to successfully rebuild. However, not all backups are good copies. I always advise making a copy first in the Finder. I have seen a backup go completely bad during the rebuild leaving you with nothing. You can export as Entourage archive (.rge) selecting contacts or everything and as a tab delimited file. Do both. Tab delimited files are extremely small and can be opened in any text editor or Excel.
