Kevin, I've had a similar situation.

Here's a workaround I found:

Create a group of all the addresses.  (He has probably already done so.)

Once they are in their own group, look at the little icon next to each
address in the group.  The ones that have bad addresses will have a
different icon; instead of a person, they may have a blue dot.

Look at those with the blue dot - that may be where your problem lies.

Once you delete the problem addresses from the group, you should be able to
use it.  Just place the name of the group in the BCC field.
