it makes a copy and converts it. The original data is retained in 2004 format and can be returned to when the trial is finished. Mail received in 2008 is saved in the 2008 format, but I believe that accounts are set up with 'leave on server' enabled, so when/if you return to 2004 the data can be downloaded again (and will eb automatically).
