Sorry to hear about your disaster.
I have experienced a similar problem. Entourage suddenly gave me an error
and forced a rebuild. After that, all my iCal contacts and Address Book.app
entries were gone.
STUPID Entourage.
I was lucky, as I have my iCal entries all synced separately to another Mac
on my network.
So, I did a backup of the iCal database on the second Mac, and could then
restore from it. And now, I periodically backup the databases of iCal and
Address Book.app. Certainly if there is a problem with Entourage, I
immediately do a backup of those databases, ready to do a restore.
But that won't help you now. Try this:
You might do a backup of iPhone before you restart either Entourage or iCal.
Connect iPhone to the Mac. Open iTunes, connect the iPhone, and do NOT hit
"Sync." Instead, ctrl-click on the iPhone (left column), and choose
"Backup". If your iCal and Address Book.app entries are wiped out, and if
your iPhone entries are also wiped, you may then be able to restore iPhone
from the Backup, and then restore iCal and Address Book from the iPhone.
Stupid Entourage!
When you eventually are able to get Entourage going, the Preference for
"Sync with iCal/Address Book" will be OFF. You will need to turn it back on
in the Prefs. So, if you are restoring from iPhone, be careful about the
order in which you restore. If you restore Entourage, when you change the
Entourage "Sync" preference to "On", choose "Merge from iCal to Entourage".
Try it this way:
iPhone ->
In iTunes, Backup iPhone iCal/Address Book ->
Sync iPhone to iCal/Address Book ->
Remove iPhone ->
Backup iCal/Address Book.app databases ->
Turn on Entourage Prefs for Sync ->
Merge from iCal/Address Book to Entourage
[Entourage Contacts and Calendar should be resorted.
If not, and if Address Book and iCal are wiped again,
Restore from iCal/Address Book backups
and/or Restore from iPhone/iPhone backup]
But first backup the newly restored iCal/Address Book databases, so that if
Entourage wipes everything out, you can "Restore from Backup."
Microsoft and Apple must do something about this persistent problem which
causes catastrophic data loss.
