I solved my own problem. Complex but worked without a reinstall of Entourage. Remember that Entourage has a kludgy workaround to make Entourage work with Spotlight. I am running OS 10.4.11 with Entourage 2004. There is an Entourage pref for Spotlight. Entourage creates thousands of "metadata cache" files. On my HD with my OS, the files are here: /Users/roger_MBP/Library/Caches/Metadata/Microsoft/Entourage/2004/Main Identity/Messages/0T/0B/0M/[many interior folders] I have Entourage installed on two Macs. Recently on one Mac I did an Archive and Install. Entourage 2004 was missing the pref for Spotlight. I finally deduced that the Archive and Install had somehow removed two key files from the HD Library. I copied those files from one HD to the second HD. But Entourage 2004 still did not create the Spotlight files. I then copied the five correct folder names (empty, not the full folders) to the right location on the second Mac. Then logged out and logged in. Then opened Entourage 2004, and found the the missing Spotlight pref had returned. Then hit "Rebuild Spotlight" in the Entourage pres, and the rebuild finally began. This procedure obviated the need to reinstall Entourage. Once again... stupid, kludgy Microsoft methodology. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Roger S.
