I am running OS 10.4.11 and Entourage 2004, with an iPhone 3G and a MacBook Pro 2.33 GHz. So my equipment, OS and software is a bit different from yours, but...
...I have had the same problem as do you. I have not found anything to prevent this problem. The problem seems to occur at random. Or, at the very least, I can't figure out what triggers the massive changes. After all, I have synced the two devices hundreds of times before, so there shouldn't be any difference in events other than a new event. The measures I have taken are: 1) Backup my iCal database every time before I do a sync. File -> Backup Database (Your menu name may be a bit different in your version of iCal.) 2) Make sure that iSync is set to "Show Data Change Alert when [any] [more than 5%] of the data on this computer will be changed." That may give you the option to stop the sync. It will certainly give you enough time to wait (don't say OK to the proposed changes), go into iCal, and do the backup immediately. You can backup iCal while that "Change Data" alert is open. Then, if the sync screws up your data, you can go back to iCal and "Restore from Backup" or "Revert to Database Backup" (the menu name varies according to the version of iCal). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Roger S.
