I wrote: My deleted items folder accumulated about 1700 items. I went to tools>schedules>empty deleted items and clicked that. That emptied about 1300 items but left everything that I have deleted in October. I cannot make them go away. Help!
It turns out that Entourage 2008 comes preset to delete only items more than 10 days old. I changed that setting under schedule and all is well.
